The Awesome Crew Lost Two Founders. “Twins of Spin” Keeps Their Sound in Rotation.

A South Carolina hip-hop group's party-rap recording spotlights Daddy D and Classy D, the producer pair behind the name Twins of Spin.

“Twins of Spin” opens like a live set. A Club 901 introduction sets the scene, and then The Awesome Crew get to the point: “we are the twins of spin, twice as nice always precise.”

That hook explains the record’s appeal. It is built on hip-hop’s MC-and-DJ tradition, with the vocal riding a steady groove and the production pushing the energy instead of sitting quietly behind it. At roughly 118 BPM, it is party rap made the old-school way: a clean hook, a reliable bounce and nothing overcomplicated.

The song comes from a group with a history much longer than the track’s streaming life. The Awesome Crew formed in Clinton, South Carolina, in the 1980s. Their original lineup was Smooth D, Daddy D, Classy D and Busy B, also known as Nasty Nard. They were not a two-person act.

The real Twins of Spin

On the band’s own Bandcamp page, “Twins of Spin” is credited as a production by Daddy D and Classy D. The two are the “Twins of Spin” behind the song’s name. The release lists executive-production credits for David L. Shabazz and Julian L.D. Shabazz, the men identified on the group’s website as Classy D and Daddy D.

Bandcamp dates the recording to March 24, 2022. Apple Music lists the single on July 29, 2023. Those are different platform release dates for an existing track, not a new October 2026 release.

The Club 901 opening makes the record feel like it is being introduced to a room full of people. There is no verified evidence here that Club 901 is an actual venue or that this particular recording was captured live.

More than a throwback

The group’s official history says Smooth D was killed in 1993 and Daddy D died years later while The Awesome Crew were working on new music. Classy D and Busy B have continued the name and the work, with Classy D now leading the vocals.

The Awesome Crew’s own description of their mission rejects the idea that they are simply trying to bring the past back. The music has evolved, they say, while holding on to the culture and knowledge that shaped them.

That matters when “Twins of Spin” comes on. The track has the feel of an old-school party record, but the chemistry is tied to people who helped build an independent rap group in South Carolina long before streaming made everybody’s hometown searchable. The hook is simple, the bounce is steady, and the history behind it runs deep.
