The artist-producer’s route runs through early production work in Houston, two years in South Korea and an Austin base he set up in 2013. Every stop added to the vocabulary, and soul, hip-hop and R&B come together through the habits of somebody used to building a song from the track outward.
A self-directed practice
Producing gives JahleelFaReaL a rare level of control over how a track grows. His vocals never get dropped onto a finished backdrop, because the arrangement, rhythm and performance develop together, and that self-direction carries into his visuals and his live show.
