Earl Adamant Allen built “Lead The Way” around one demand, and he repeats it until it sticks: quit watching people throw their lives away when you could be the one showing them another route. The hook carries the whole record. By the last minute it stops sounding like a chorus and starts sounding like a chant, the kind a room says back without being asked.

What keeps it from turning into a sermon is where he says he’s speaking from. About 22 seconds in, he plants himself in the field, doing this work for a living, and that one detail backs up everything he says next. Every warning after it sounds like it came from somebody who has stood in the gap and paid for it.

Near the one-minute mark he lays the thesis out plain. Shortcuts run into dead ends, and anything worth keeping gets built on trust and on healing yourself first. Then around two minutes in he turns it on the listener. Everybody wants to be the boss, but can you carry what comes with the title, and do you practice what you preach when nobody is clapping? That’s the strongest stretch on the song, because the finger points straight at whoever has it playing.

The pocket helps him. At about 86 BPM in A minor, the beat leaves room for every word, and he uses all of it. Our one note is on the mix. In the busiest passages the vocal sits a little inside the beat, and a stripped-down pass before the final run of the hook would give the ending the lift it’s reaching for.

This is the kind of record we ride for: conscious rap with receipts that puts the community first. “Lead The Way” is on our Rap Radar playlist now. Run it back and tell us who in your city is actually leading the way right now.
